Description

RaySearch Laboratories is a medical technology company that develops advanced software solutions for radiation therapy used in cancer treatment. Its products, such as RayStation, are used by over 1,100 cancer clinics in 40+ countries worldwide.

My role

Between 2021 - 2025, I served as the primary UX designer responsible for RaySearch's flagship radiation therapy treatment planning product RayStation and treatment machine control software RayCommand.

My responsibilities at RaySearch included:

  • Drove UX design of new interface features for 6 major RayStation releases: RayStation v2025, 2024B, 2024A, 2023B, 12A and 11B.
  • Designed new UI features for the treatment machine control software RayCommand, which is used at the Med Austron ion beam therapy and research center in Austria for advanced cancer treatment using protons and carbon ions.
  • Facilitated the development of new features by exploring key task flows, creating interactive prototypes, detailing design specifications, and providing UX guidelines to product feature teams.
  • Collaborated continuously with 12 feature teams of RayStation, and with the core product team for RayCommand.
  • Provided daily UX support to product teams consisting of over 100 developers, clinical specialists and subject matter experts.
  • Validated and iterated on design solutions using user feedback from formative and summative usability testing, RaySearch's user community platform, and feedback from RaySearch's internal service department and clinical specialists.
  • Ensured product usability in accordance with the IEC 62366: "Application of usability engineering to medical devices" standard.
  • Performed the transition of RaySearch's design systems from Sketch to Figma and maintained UX patterns and design system libraries for RayStation and RayCommand.
  • Reviewed user manuals and documentation to ensure usability and clarity for end users.
Key projects

At RaySearch, I designed user interfaces for several key, high-impact initiatives, including:

Liver ablation

  • Liver Ablation product is an image-guided thermal ablation software developed for use in interventional oncology treatments.
  • Developed in close collaboration with MD Anderson cancer clinic in Houston, Texas, US, it leverages RayStation's advanced biomechanical deformable registration and deep learning based segmentation algorithms.
  • The product supports precise planning, targeting, intra-procedural tracking and verification in minimally invasive liver tumor ablation treatments, enabling accurate tumor coverage and minimized local tumor progression.

Online adaptive

  • Online adaptive feature, part of RayStation's 'Automated Replanning' module, delivers a cutting-edge, AI-driven approach to adaptive treatment.
  • Powered by advanced deep learning segmentation and planning algorithms, it allows clinics to precisely adapt treatment plans to a patient's daily anatomy in real time, while the patient remains on the treatment table.
  • Released as part of RayStation v2025, the feature is currently operational at The Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London, UK, Europe's largest comprehensive cancer centre.

Plan explorer

  • Plan explorer module in RayStation is an large-scale treatment planning and comparison solution that supports a protocol-driven, fully automated workflow.
  • The workflow includes automatic image import, segmentation, and the generation of multiple treatment plan alternatives across different treatment techniques, modalities and machine types.
  • The module provides versatile tools for ranking and filtering a large number of treatment plan alternatives, as well as for detailed review and comparison of the selected candidate plans.
